Further information
Discover the most authentic Venice, the one little frequented by tourists, thanks to this walk through the Sestieri of Castello and San Marco. You will visit evocative and little-known corners that will transport you to an atmosphere of yesteryear.
A walk, starting from the Giardini Reali di San Marco, which aims to gradually take you from the crowded San Marco area to the quiet Castello district. This area of Venice is characterised by having preserved intact its most authentic soul, made up of scenes of daily life, slow rhythms and little-known corners. There are also countless churches with unexpectedly valuable works of art.
Along the way, you can admire the imposing Church of San Zaccaria and its altarpiece, the Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints, painted in 1505 by Bellini. Also interesting is the Renaissance-style Church of San Francesco della Vigna, based on a design by Sansovino and Palladio, which is linked to the life of St Mark.
From here you will not miss the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, one of the largest in the city, and its homonymous Basilica. In front of the latter, the huge equestrian monument of Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio and the monumental entrance to the Ospedale Civile will not go unnoticed.
Another essential stop, before reaching Campo di Santa Maria Formosa and then San Marco, is surely the Libreria Acqua Alta. With over ten thousand books, it is considered one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. Scattered books, old boats and cats on the shelves will give your visit such a chaotic style that you will find the order you had lost, and maybe even some interesting books!
Language: Italian, English, German, French and Spanish.
