Further information

Walking tour in the Jewish Ghetto of Venice with wine and food tasting in loco.

The Ghetto of Venice is considered the oldest in Europe. The Jewish presence in the city dates before the year Thousand. Over the centuries their community grew to a considerable number, so high that in 1516 the Serenissima established restrictions and rules for them.

The area of the Ghetto reflects the current one, an small island surrounded by canals and bridges. On the latter, there were gates that regulated the way forward of the Jewish community, signs that are still visible today.

Very interesting to know that the word ghetto has Venetian origins, in particular from the term "geto”. This indicated the foundry in that area of the city. Then the Jewish population, of main Central-Eastern origin, over time crippled the pronunciation "geto" in "gheto" (read in German) giving rise to the term that today we know all over the world.

This walking tour wants to discover the area of the Ghetto and in particular its culinary specialties with the typical kosher cuisine.

In fact, there are two stops at the restaurants/bars of the Ghetto in order to taste the typical sweets of Jewish cuisine and a taste of the most traditional Kosher dishes. You can also taste the typical Jewish-Venetian dishes such as sardines in saor and artichoke bottoms, accompanied by a glass of Kosher wine.

Departure from Santa Lucia Railway Station, or from other points on request. Timetable to be agreed according to your needs on request at the time of booking.

During the 2 hour walk is also included the presence of a companion and the possibility to visit, on request as an extra, the Synagogues and the museum of the Ghetto.
